Selecting the rural and remote doctors of tomorrow

General Practitioners for rural and remote Australia: Evaluating the selection process

We conducted an evaluation of selection to training for the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). Performing this evaluation for a second consecutive year allowed us to really get ‘under-the bonnet’ of the process and make some informed recommendations for refinement as this process moves forward.

The College commissioned a repeat evaluation of their Australian General Practice Training Program (AGTP) selection process. They wanted to determine whether the process had been robust and how they could improve for future iterations. The evaluation was conducted in two parts:

  • Outcomes analysis: a comprehensive review and analysis to determine whether the assessments and process are rigorous, transparent and defensible.
  • Online survey: an exploration of stakeholder experiences to ensure the experience is positive and transparent across all stages of the selection process.

Recommendations for change included refinement to assessment instruments and practices and continued process enhancements. We look forward to being involved in ongoing improvement initiatives at ACRRM.
