Withdrawal from Surgical Training: Survey and Interviews

So you don’t want to be a surgeon anymore?
Exploring the perceptions of trainees who withdraw from surgical training

A Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) commissioned study. We designed and conducted an online survey and in-depth interviews. A 50% survey response rate was achieved with all trainees who had withdrawn between 2008 and 2015. The interviews provided insights into circumstances leading up to withdrawal.  The experience of withdrawal itself was exposed.  Collectively this work provided RACS with a mandate for change and reform across surgical training.

“That relief upon leaving was unbelievable. It was like the sun came out …”
